The company has an interesting way of naming its products these days. Besides moving from what was called Dragon Dictate to the more logical Dragon for Mac ($200), the new version of Dragon that you might have expected to be called Dragon NaturallySpeaking 14 for Windows is now called Dragon Professional Individual ($300). It's part of the enterprise solution Nuance is offering, but it will be of interest to individual users as well since it will let you sync multiple installations of Dragon, across platforms. I intend to test and write about both Dragon Professional Individual and Dragon Anywhere.

[This article was written in 2010. For a more recent of Dragon click.] I’ve been waiting for almost 10 years for Dragon Naturally Speaking to arrive on the Macintosh! And finally it’s here – Dragon Dictate. Despite being a long time Apple user user, in 1999 I purchased a PC (yes that’s right!) just to run Dragon Naturally Speaking. I would dictate to the PC and then copy files to my Mac on a thumb drive! Dragon Naturally Speaking was by far the best voice recognition software – but sadly it was not available for the Apple platform. Not long after that, IBM released Viavoice for the Mac.

Those interested in the other Dragon software bundles can find out more about Dragon Professional Individual for PC and Dragon Legal Individual on Nuance's. It has been a long time since I've used desktop dictation, but my impression was that it had reached 95 to 97% accuracy level about 10 years ago. How could it possibly be 24% better than that? Those old accuracy estimates were, shall we say, very generous (i.e., not accurate). I've heard from a family member who has used dictation software regularly since the 1990s that major gains in accuracy have happened in the past couple years, however.

Dragon Professional Individual Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium (formerly Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred) was retired with the release of v15. Speech recognition's fatal flaw: Email Nuance needs to find a way to fully support switching back and forth between typing and dictation in email products, such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail.

How to find quick access toolbar in excel for mac 2011. Frequently, it's those old user profiles that put the upgrade at risk. But because those cozy old profiles worked so well in the previous version of Dragon, people are loath to part with them when they upgrade to a major new release like Dragon 5. Performing a clean install is definitely the right approach. I proved that to myself with my first installation attempt.
